From the moment we’re born we are labelled, categorised, put in boxes and
pigeonholes. When we’re told we are stupid, ugly or worse from a very young
age, we believe those things and then they start to define us.
Every person on the planet is a unique individual with special and unique
qualities. In order for you to live up to your full potential, you need to break
free of the limiting labels that have been put onto you by society.
For example, when a child is diagnosed with ADHD and there is a big song
and dance about this, certain expectations about that child’s behaviour will arise.
The more the child hears people talking about ADHD and the behaviour that
goes with it, the more that behaviour is programmed in.
The child then thinks, “I have ADHD so that means I can’t concentrate at school, I’m
aggressive, I’m disobedient and I’m a bully. I can do that!” The child
becomes completely at one with the label and the label then dictates his behaviour,
making it seem impossible for any other behaviour to take place or even be considered.
Every child has potential and every child has skills, talents and ability in certain areas.
For a child to fulfill that potential, it is important that negative labels are avoided
and only positive reinforcement is given when good things are achieved. All
children deserve nothing less than encouragement and the chance to be as
fully developed as is possible for them.
Of course, everyone has a different skill set and different abilities. The point I am
making is that every child deserves the opportunity to be the very best they can be.
As adults, what can we do when we’ve had negative and limiting labels attached to us
for most of our lives?
Is there, in fact, anything that can be done?
The answer is a resounding ‘YES!”
Life Coaching helps you move beyond those limiting beliefs and crippling labels
that have defined you your whole life. You are more than a label, you are so much
more than the pigeonhole into which you’ve been shoved.
Think about one of the most brilliant minds on the planet at this time – Stephen
Hawking. At the age of 69 and having neuro-muscular dystrophy, a crippling
degenerative disease which has him in a wheelchair, unable to speak or do anything
at all for himself, he continues to make incredible contributions to mankind through
his scientific research. Now there’s a man who doesn’t allow the label of chronic illness
to define him! He utilises what he has – his superb mind – to make a difference on
the planet and to be the best he can be.
I urge you now, to think about the labels that have been placed on you
and decide now that this is the last day you will live up to your label – you are so much
more than your labels and you can achieve whatever you desire when you rip off the
label, crawl out of the pigeonhole and break free to be the whole and wonderful person
you really are!
