Sometimes we just get to the end of our tether and feel like throwing in the towel. In spite of all the hard work, perseverance, commitment, focus and drive, life is not going the way we want.
It happens to everybody, even the most focused and positive individual occasionally feels flat and demoralised. I’ve recently had two clients who hit the wall. Each one of them is incredibly focused and motivated to succeed in their chosen field and yet, almost simultaneously, they fell flat and they felt that life was futile and pointless.
So what can be done when you suddenly lose your mojo and truly believe it’s lost forever? A good coach knows that the person may need to sit in their problem and bad attitude for a little while, the emphasis being a little while. The benefit of this is that the otherwise happy and focused individual starts to feel increasingly uncomfortable in their place of pity and then becomes motivated to climb out of it and get back on track. Without darkness there can be no light and it’s completely unreasonable to expect to be up 100% of the time.
The trick though, is to only allow yourself an occasional and brief wallow, rather than making it a lifestyle. There is a very old saying that ‘the darkest hour is just before the dawn’ and in Life Coaching we say that after every breakdown there is a breakthrough.
A few months ago, I had my own breakdown and found myself back in my old pity pit again, after a very long absence. As I sat in my misery and felt sorry for myself, I started to feel increasingly uncomfortable with this outmoded state of mind and realised that ‘I don’t do this anymore’. So I decided to stop!
Since then, my life has undergone a major transformation, personally and in my business. I’m attracting more and more clients and speaking gigs and it’s as though I was never in the pity pit at all. My quick visit back to my old state of mind showed me very clearly that it doesn’t become me anymore and makes me extremely uncomfortable. It served to give me a contrast and make me even more focused on the things I want in my life.
Because I have the awareness of mindset and the tools to change, I was able to get this change happening for myself. Not everybody has the tools to achieve this.
