Are you going for your big dream? How will your life change if you just go for it?
What has prevented you from taking the action you know you must take?
Usually the answer to the last question is…me. That’s right, if you have not progressed along the path to achieving your dreams and goals, YOU are probably the one who is stopping you. You can always find a hundred reasons (excuses) to not take action. Family commitments, work pressures, lack of time, too young, too old, too tired, too stressed, it’s not perfect yet, etc, etc, etc ad nauseum! At the end of the day, these are all only excuses. If you really want your dream, if you have a big enough reason to do it, you will take action now.
Ask yourself, “How badly do I want this?” If it’s close to your heart and it lights you up, you must go for it now. Take action to get you started on the path to your dream. If it’s not perfect or if you make a mistake, it doesn’t matter. At least you are doing something about getting what you want. In fact, it’s good to make mistakes. Mistakes are not failures, they are learning and quality control opportunities.
Let me tell you a story… My parents migrated to Australia from Holland in 1950. They went back once, in 1963 for six months, returned to Australia and never went back to their home land.
They had a life long dream of returning to see family and friends and they always planned that when the children were grown and independent, they would fulfill that dream.
So, the three of us grew up and left home, starting families of our own. Times were tough for my parents, my father had been retrenched at the age of fifty and been unable to find another job. They sold their home in order to buy a business and struggled along for many years. Then, they bought another home and started with a fresh mortgage. Eventually they sold the business and continued to pay the mortgage on a pension.
Finally, the big day came when they had paid off the house. Now they could save for that trip back to Holland!
After a few years of scrimping and saving, they had the money together for the big trip. They looked around their home and realised the carpet was worn and in need of replacement. What to do – new carpet or trip to Holland?
They made their decision – the carpet.
Twelve months later my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer, eleven months after that he passed away. My mother struggled to come to terms with his death and after a couple of years decided she would make the trip to Holland to see her sister and a close friend and also to Africa, where two of her brothers lived. Instead of taking action, she thought about it, considered it, procrastinated and fluffed around for so long that by the time she was ready to book her flight, her sister, her friend and one of her brothers had died, her own health deteriorated to such an extent that she was no longer able to fly and the trip never happened. And then she sold the house with the new carpet because it was too big for her on her own.
The moral of the story is obvious – Just Go For It! Do it now because we never know what’s around the corner and we never know when we will no longer be able to take the action that is necessary.
